About

GhettoBSD.org was originally a parody site of FreeBSD.org. It is in no way meant to offend any of the BSDs or users/communities.

GhettoBSD is now a Frankenstein of a website primarily to help others in various ways.

GhettoBSD is named so for running Free/Open BSD on “ghetto” equipment. Here’s a brief history of what it’s been run on (from what I can remember):

  • Several 286/386 enhanced 25Mhz (with turbo on!) with 8-16MB RAM MAX
  • Pentium II 100, 133, 166Mhz with 32-64MB RAM MAX
  • AMD K6-2 500 Mhz up to 128MB RAM
  • P4 2.4Ghz 512MB RAM
  • P4 3Ghz up to 1GB RAM
  • Several virtual machines on different workstations (fake BSDs!) with many different specs.

Although, currently GhettoBSD is hosted on much more advanced and environmentally friendly ‘server’:

  • Intel BOXD510MO Intel Atom D510 Intel NM10 Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo
  • 2GB DDR2 800 RAM
  • Scythe S-FLEX SFF21D 120mm
  • Samsung cd/dvd burner
  • APEX MI-008 Black Steel Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case

Those are pretty much the basics. For those wondering, that box takes up less power (29 Watts idle) than my primary LCD monitor (32 Watts idle).

Although before I’ve gone as far as proving free hosting to random users, e-mail, and even the occasional shell, it’ll now be dedicated to helping others through a forum and a blog.

Fun Fact: I’ve owned many domains over the years, many related to the different arms of the GhettoBSD network (GhettoMail.org). One of the domains used for hosting, email and shells was gbsd.org (ran on its own separate box). While living abroad I didn’t get to pay for the domain when it expired (I didn’t even know!). So like many others, someone snatched it up right away. The owner of gbsd.org is now: The Governor Baxter School for the Deaf. As anyone else, I was upset when I realized I ‘lost’ the domain. But once I found out who snatched it up it was OK with me. As matter of fact,  I would have gladly donated it to them if they had asked!
