I already explained the reason here: http://www.ghettobsd.org/new-and-improved/pensamientos/2010/08/21/76/

So here's the script: http://www.ghettobsd.org/gbsd-scripts/mp3-cd-backup.gbsdx

Another phone that is late in the game at this point, the hero is a pretty cool phone. At first I got it because it was a great deal I couldn't pass up ($49) and I wanted to check out the android platform. I can't say I was disappointed, but can't say I was entirely thrilled with it.

I liked the android market (first time using it). It's completely different from WM because everything is click and install instead of downloading, transferring and then searching/installing. This brings the usability level WAY up of the phone/OS. The little track ball was interesting, and after I moved up to the Evo I kinda missed it for very few things (such as a certain helicopter game!). The screen wasn't an impressive size, but was impressive in quality. The finish sucked, like the chrome on the TouchPro which chipped off, the send and end keys too peeled off after a while.

Because of Android, I didn't feel the need to root for customization. It wasn't until I upgraded from 1.5 to 2.1 that the phone was a little laggy - though others say their phones run better with 2.1.

Android was a good enough experience that I would like to go further with this platform, though the phone just needed better specs. Of course there are some who love the Hero, and that's fine. But it's just not for me.

GhettoBSD on "HTC Evo 4G"

This is the 2nd Android powered phone I have by HTC. It's a completely difference experience when compared to the Hero. And in my opinion, is what 'powerful' mobile phones should be. It's extremely fast (which makes everything not just bearable, but they way it should be), intuitive to use, and with the android market well, a snap to load things you want!

The screen is the selling point to me. I've been asking why it's taken so long for something like this to come out. Next the processor is a dream. Battery life is about a working day for me. But you'll need to carry a charger on you for sure. Not having a physical keyboard isn't a problem with this phone because of its screen size! And for the time I used it, I didn't find it necessary to root the phone simply because everything I wanted to do with it, it could already do (with programs installed of course!).

What's nice about this particular phone is the 8GB SD card that comes with it! Add to that it comes with dual flash LEDs (which double as a flash light!) and it's a pretty good phone out of the box. Though, unlike the Mogul that came with a headset, carrying pouch, extra stylus and adapter (for using the usb headset AND charging at the same time).

The Samusung Epic will be out soon... it's like an Evo but with a physical keyboard. That might take the Evo's crown, but HTC is hard to beat.

GhettoBSD on "HTC Touch Pro 2"

The Touch Pro 2 is actually quite an upgrade in experience, even though hardware isn't that much better (from a specs point of view). Overall it appears to run faster/smoother than the TP. The stock WM 6.5 ROM it came shipped with was pretty bad. As a matter of fact, on every boot up it would ask to send error details to MS, even if it was just rebooted once before!

After having used the stock ROM for ~ 2 weeks, I went ahead and threw Energy ROM on it. Found here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86489 I was trying to avoid the 6.5 release but ended up liking it. It has what I was looking for, specifically the ability to turn on/off bluetooth from the home screen, have the weather, fast access to contacts (without having to switch screens) and a view of upcoming events from my calendar. Though this is the first ROM for the TP2 I have used, it has been great and has the hallmarks of what a good ROM is and how it performs.

The keyboard still isn't comfortable for me (yet?). I prefer the one on the TouchPro. I actually liked the one on the Mogul, but that's long gone now. The sliding action is really stiff, not as easy to open up as the TP was with one hand. But the screen size more than makes up for that and the tilting option might come in handy some day. Even if the TP2 is a little old, it still keeps up with the HTC Evolution...

The overall experience is good enough to keep me using it as my primary phone and having used the Evo for a bit over a month, I'm not missing the evo too much. Especially now since I'm customizing the TP2 to my liking.

Here's a link to unlock your phone (necessary in order to flash a custom ROM). http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=93252

Right now when you log in a who command will automatically be displayed.

The program should run the same but color code the users.

They'll be coded by recognized ips. So if a connection under a specific user name is established and it's not from a recognized ip, you can immediately see that.

So, after integrating my wordpress with bbpress, a little bug popped up.

Apparently when you typed something like "I'm" it was posted as "I/'m"

Yeah, that was frustrating. So instead of showing:

Here's what I've done!

It would instead display:

Here's what I/'ve done!

So if that happens to your install, here's how to fix it:

This is what i found:

From: http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/slashes-being-added-in-front-of-apostrophes

User: baptiste

Post: Easy fix (hack) in bb-includes/template-functions.php, update this function to look like this:

function get_post_text() {
//      $bb_post = bb_get_post( get_post_id( $post_id ) );
//      return apply_filters( 'get_post_text', $bb_post->post_text, $bb_post->post_id );

global $bb_post;
return stripslashes($bb_post->post_text);
}

May be an artifact of the wordpress integration - not sure.

The above did indeed work. But I still looked at the other posts and problems others had.

http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/apostrophe-and-or-quotation-marks-cause-backslash-to-appear

user: arpowers

ok, found the answer wooooooo!

The 'real' reason this wasn't working was....

'magic_quotes_gpc' is set to 'off' on my server (in php.ini)

All these other solutions are band-aids, my hunch is that making sure magic quotes is 'on' is the solution.

user: jackey

Putting "php_value magic_quotes_gpc 1" in my .htaccess file worked for me... for now.

The above also worked. But it turns out that enabling the magi_quotes_gpc might make your server vulnerable to sql injection attacks.

So you hack the bbpress code or modify the .htaccess file (add to it).

Worth noting, someone said that by changing the code as per baptiste's method could corrupt backups you make of sql. Maybe I'll wait for that bridge until I come to it?

Big thanks to chrishajer!

GhettoBSD on "Add color to your terminal!"

So you want to add color to your terminal.

For some reason, this seems to be a problem on BSD. There are plenty of easy ways to find options for linux, but not so much for BSD.

Here's what I've found out!

First, you need to know how to create color. (Good luck finding good and easy documentation!)

In your console type the following:

echo "^[[0;31mhello"

You should have seen a "hello" appear in red! If not, then you probably aren't using a BSD!

or

You need to create the correct character. To create the ^[ character you need to type the following

ctrl + v, + ctrl + [

You will now have the correct character.

So, how do you add color to your prompt?

Open up your .cshrc

vi ~/.cshrc

Now look for the area that has the following:

if ($?prompt) then

Under that, add the following:

set prompt = "n%{33[0;33m%}%n%{33[0;36m%}@%{33[0;31m%}%m%{33[0;0m%} %{33[0;33m[%{33[0;37m %. %{33[0;33m]%}%{33[0;0m%} %{33[0;33m>%{33[0;37m%} "

You have to log in again before it takes effect.

Yeah, I know what that looks like! But it's good stuff. With that code you'll see something like this for your prompt:

user@host [ ~ ] >

So you don't like how it looks do you? Well, you can change how it looks, but not yet!

What about file and directory colors you say?

ls -G

You say that's all you need? Well, until now that's all you had!

Towards the end of your .cshrc file add the following:

#enable color display for listing files.
set color

# Specify the colors for listing various file types.
#di      Directory
#fi     File
#ln     Symbolic Link
#pi     Fifo file
#so     Socket file
#bd     Block (buffered) special file
#cd     Character (unbuffered) special file
#or Symbolic Link pointing to a non-existent file (orphan)
#mi Non-existent file pointed to by a symbolic link (visible when you type ls -l)
#ex File which is executable (ie. has 'x' set in permissions).

setenv LS_COLORS "no=00:fi=0;36:di=01;33:ln=00;33;40:pi=40;33:so=01;35"
#setenv LS_COLORS "$LS_COLORS":"*.ps=01;35:"

Save, quit, and login again. Now check out your files!

Excellent!

But now comes the cool part! Download this file:

And then run it!

mv  ghettobsd-color-guide.gbsdx /usr/gbsd
cd /usr/gbsd
sh ghettobsd-color-guide.gbsdx

Ohhhh yeah!

So now you can go on and make something awesome with your new found abilities. Or just edit the code you've found here.

At the time of this post, wordpress and bbpress integration isn\\\\\\\'t the easiest thing to do with previous installs of wp. So searching around and asking for help I came across a few things that might help others out. Good luck!

In order for these template to work you need to have WordPress (WP) & bbPress (bbP) integrated fully. This is not for users who uses BuddyPress.

WordPress version 2.9.2 & bbPress version 1.0.2 User, Cookie, and Deep integration Tutorial

This tutorial is based on the assumption you know how to install WordPress and bbPress and are comfortable with editing php files.

Known Issues on why this tutorial doesn’t work:

    * When your hosting doesn’t use php5.
* If you have changed your database prefix.
* When your bbP folder is not in the WP folder.
* When you upgraded from an older version of WP or bbP.
* When you use a free hosting companies or some internationals (outside of US).
* Sometimes when you log into WP you can not get to the bbP Dashboard.

Things to know before installing WP & bbP

    * There are a lot of steps but they aren’t hard, don’t sweat it.
* Do not use “www” anywhere
* Try not to change the database prefix
* You need a file editor and access to your files.
* WordPress = WP & bbPress = bbP
* COPY is copy to your clipboard. PASTE is paste from your clipboard

Here we go!

   1. Install WordPress. The normal install nothing to change. Test it.

   2. User & Cookie Integration:
A. Install bbPress within WP and following these steps:

         B. Step 1 is standard. Go to Step 2

         C. Step 2 check the boxes Add integration settings, Add cookie integration settings, and User integration database settings.

         D. Under Cookies:
1. WordPress address (URL): enter you WP URL without www
2. Blog address (URL): 99% of the time is the same as above
3. WordPress “auth” cookie key: enter “blah”
4. WordPress “auth” cookie salt: enter “blah”
5. WordPress “secure auth” cookie key: enter “blah”
6. WordPress “secure auth” cookie salt: enter “blah”
7. WordPress “logged in” cookie key: enter “blah”
8. WordPress “logged in” cookie salt: enter “blah”

         E. Click on Save WordPress Integration

         F. Click on Go to Step 3

         G. Step 3 is standard. Make sure you pick “admin” from the drop down box.

         H. Complete the install. Everything should have worked out fine. If not please go to the bbPress’ forums and bring up your issue.

         9. Test the bbPress install.

        10. Now the fun part. You need a php editor like Adobe Dreamweaver.

        11. In your WP folder locate and open “wp-config.php” and leave it open.
A. Go to this website: https://api.wordpress.org/secret-key/1.1/salt
B. Select all and COPY the all information on that site.
C. Go to your wp-config.php file and highlight line 45 (it starts with define(‘AUTH_KEY’)) to line 48 (starts with define(‘NONCE_KEY’)) and PASTE the new keys. You basically change your 4 keys to 8 keys.
D. Save the file (and upload it if you need to) and leave it open.

        12. In your bbP folder locate and open “bb-config.php”
A. Highlight line 41 (it starts with define(‘AUTH_KEY’)) to line 44 (starts with define(‘NONCE_KEY’)) and PASTE the new keys. You basically change your 4 keys to 8 keys.
B. Add “BB_” in front of all the 8 key names. AUTH_KEY to BB_AUTH_KEY, SECURE_AUTH_KEY to BB_SECURE_AUTH_KEY, etc.
C. Save the file (and upload it if you need to) and leave it open.

        13. Clear your cache on your browser.

        14. Log into you WP Dashboard and Navigate to Plugins -> Add New.
A. Search for “bbpress” and “bbPress Integration” will appear on the list.
B. Install and activate the plugin.
C. Navigate to Settings-> bbPress Integration.
D. Fill out the information (no www) and click on WordPress MU. I know you don’t have MU just do it anyway. Click Save Changes.
E. In the blue box COPY the information.

        15. Go to your wp-config.php file and PASTE it on line 16 (line before // ** MySQL settings). Save the file (and upload it if you need to). You can close this file.

        16. Go to your bb-config.php file and PASTE it on line 13 (line before // ** MySQL settings). Remove COOKIE_HASH line. Save the file (and upload it if you need to). You can close this file.

        17. You can delete the bbPress Integration plugin, it’s no longer needed.

        18. Clear your cache on your browser.

        19. Log into you bbP Dashboard and navigate to Settings -> WordPress Integration
A. In WordPress Administrator make sure you pick bbPress Key Master, the others pick Members until you’re more comfortable with bbP.
B. Click Save Changes.
C. Scroll down and if the three WordPress “auth” cookie salt, WordPress “secure auth” cookie salt, and WordPress “logged in” cookie salt are not editable and have an icon of lock continue to the next step. If not, go back to step 2.10 “Now the fun part…”

   3. Deep Integration.
A. You need to get the absolute path to the file wp-load.php
B. Go back to your bb-config.php file, on line before the end ( ?>) enter this line “include_once( ‘/your/absolute/path/to/wordpress/wp-load.php’ );” without the quotes. (beware some pasting of this code make the ‘ character change, make sure it’s the button left of the enter key on your keyboard)
C. Replace “/your/absolute/path/to/wordpress/” with your absolute path to wp-load.php
D. If you don’t know your absolute path then download this file abs (credit goes to John James Jacoby & r-a-y for this file).
E. Unzip and place this file in your WP folder (same place where wp-load.php resides)In your browser navigate to the file. (example = http://yoursite.com/abs.php)COPY the information on that page into the proper place in the bb-config.php file. Save the bb-config.php (and upload it if you need to) and you can close the file.
F. Delete abs.php of your server.
H. Clear your cache on your browser.
I. Log into your WP Dashboard and navigate to Plugins
J. Delete the plugin “bbPress Integration”

   4. and you’re done, test it.

GhettoBSD on "How to stop backticks (`) from turning into
"

In a default bbpress install, you can use ` or
to specify "code" formatting. The problem is, none of the scripts I put up would display properly because we use ` in the bourne shell. So it had to be removed!

This hack was provided by zaerl on the bbpress.org forum. It's worth mentioning that on bbpress updates you might have to re-apply this hack.

Navigate to: /forum/bb-includes/

1) Edit the file: functions.bb-formatting.php

2) Look for the following sections and make the following changes*:

function bb_decodeit( $matches ) {
return "$text";

function bb_code_trick( $text ) {
//$text = preg_replace_callback("|(`)(.*?)`|", 'bb_encodeit', $text);
//$text = preg_replace_callback("!(^|n)`(.*?)`!s", 'bb_encodeit', $text);

3) Save the file.

The pastebin code can be found here: http://pastebin.com/SAx377E4 (Thanks again to zaerl!)

To modify your theme so it doesn't say "... you can also use backticks..."

1) Go to your themes directory.

2) Edit this file: edit-form.php

3) Go to the very bottom and remove this from the line*:

<?php _e('Put code in between

`backticks`
.'); ?>

4) Save that and open post-form.php

5) Go to the very bottom and remove this from the line:

<?php _e('You can also put code in between backtick (
`
) characters.'); ?>

* Make sure you change all [ to < and ] to >.

All done!

This will be the section I put all of my reviews in. I always get tired of looking around for reviews and not being able to ask a question to the author. What especially grinds my gears is when those site aggregates snatch up all of the reviews and become ultra useless.

So here, I'll attempt to not only post all of my reviews, but even try to answer questions about them!

What will be first?

Stay tuned... http://www.luxeed.com

GhettoBSD on "Remove ^M from all files in 1 directory."

This script will remove the ^M generally found in windows modified/created files. It will remove all the ^M instances in all the files in the working directory.

1) In your scripts directory (/usr/gbsd in our examples) create a file named m-clean-all.gbsdx

cd /usr/gbsd/
vi m-clean-all.gbsdx

2) paste the following:

#!/bin/sh
ls > zerase
query=$1
for i in `cat zerase`; do
sh /gbsd/dos2unix-^m.gbsdx $i
rm zerase
done

3) Change the file permissions of the new file so you can execute it:

chmod 750 m-clean-all.gbsdx

4) Add the following alias to your .cshrc under the alias section:

vi ~/.cshrc
alias m-clean-all	sh /usr/gbsd/m-clean-all.gbsdx

5) Change to the directory with the files containing ^M. Run the program to clean up all of your files:

m-clean-all

All done!

You might have to login again for the alias to take effect.

In order for this to work you must have dos2unix-^m.gbsdx in your /usr/gbsd/ directory found here: http://ghettobsd.org/new-and-improved/foro/topic/remove-the-m-from-1-file-in-console
If you have it in a different directory, you can change the code to reflect that.

You can download the script here: http://ghettobsd.org/gbsd-scripts/m-clean-all.gbsdx

This script will remove the ^M generally found in windows modified/created files. It will remove all the ^M instances in one file. It can be run in any directory on your system.

1) Go to your scripts directory.

cd /usr/gbsd/

2) Create a file named dos2unix-^m.gbsdx

vi dos2unix-^m.gbsdx

3) Paste the following code*:

#!/bin/sh
cat $1 | tr -d "^M" > dos2unix-temp.erase.me
mv dos2unix-temp.erase.me $1
echo done
exit

* The ^M you see is not the characters ^ and M, but rather a character obtained by typing ctrl + v, + m (press and hold ctrl, then pres and let go v then m). This will give you ^M in the vi editor.

4) Save the file and quit.

:wq

5) Set the script to executable:

chmod 755 dos2unix-^m.gbsdx

6) In your bourne shell file, add this alias:

vi ~/.cshrc
alias dos2unix     sh /gbsd/dos2unix-^m.gbsdx

* You might have to login again to be able to use the new alias!

7) Find a file that has ^M in it. From console type:

dos2unix filename-to-clean

The program will return 'done' when finished.

You can also use the script like this by placing the file you want to clean in the same directory:

For most of the scripts, programs, and other random things that'll be posted, it would be best to keep them all in one directory. This way, you can easily follow the examples and references made later on.

Here's what to do:

1) Create a directory you have full permissions to. This can be your ~ (home) directory or something under /usr/

mkdir /usr/gbsd

2) Hopefully that directory has 755 permissions. If not do the following:

chmod 755 /usr/gbsd/

You should now have created a directory you can place your ghetto scripts in!
